Dental bridges fill the gap created by one or more missing teeth. They consist of two or more crowns and a false tooth. The crowned teeth are called abutment teeth which can either be natural teeth or dental implants. The false tooth/teeth in between the abutment teeth are called pontics.

Benefits of dental bridges

Here are some of the advantages of dental bridges:

  • Restore your bite and smile
  • Maintain your face shape
  • Improve your ability to chew and speak
  • Help reduce the risk of losing teeth adjacent to the missing tooth

What to expect

Getting a dental bridge usually takes 2 visits to your dentist office. During the first visit, the abutment teeth are prepared. The preparation involves reshaping these teeth by removing a portion of the enamel to allow room for a crown to be placed over them. Next, impressions of your teeth will be made to send off to a dental lab. The dental lab technician will use this impression to create your permanent bridge which usually takes a few days. In the meantime, your dentist will make a temporary bridge to protect your exposed teeth and gums while the bridge is being made. During your second visit, your dentist will remove the temporary bridge and the new bridge will be checked and adjusted to make sure it fits perfectly. In some cases, your dentist may use temporary cement to allow you to get accustomed to your new bridge for a few weeks. You’ll return to the office for a third appointment and your dentist will talk to you about the fit, make adjustments if needed, and then permanently cement the bridge in place.

How to take care of your dental bridges

Your dental bridges can last from 8 to 15 years and can last even longer if you maintain good oral hygiene. Follow these tips to keep your dental bridge in great condition for years to come:

  • Brush your teeth twice a day.
  • Floss between your teeth and under the dental bridge.
  • Schedule dental exams and dental cleanings every 6 months.

How much do dental bridges cost?
