Dental crowns for patients in need of teeth restoration from dentist in Anaheim

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that is placed over the tooth that has been decayed or damaged. It restores your tooth’s shape and size and improves the way it looks. Crowns are shaped like natural teeth and are also created to match the natural color of your teeth, so they can perfectly blend in.

Why would you need a dental crown?

Your dentist may recommend a dental crown for the following reasons:

  • You’ve had a root canal.
  • Your tooth is weakened by a huge cavity that is too large for a filling.
  • Your tooth is chipped or broken.
  • Your tooth has severe discoloration.

What to expect

Two visits are usually needed. The first step involves examining and preparing the tooth. Your dentist will apply anesthetic to numb the tooth and the surrounding gum tissue. Then, he/she will drill the tooth to remove the outer portion where the crown will be placed. Any decay will also be removed during this process as well. Your dentist will make an impression of the tooth using a mold or 3d scanner and send it to a dental lab. It usually takes 2 weeks for the crown to be ready. In the meantime, a temporary crown will be placed on your tooth. Your tooth may feel sensitive to hot and cold while you have the temporary crown. It’s best to avoid hard and sticky food during this time.

On your second appointment, the temporary crown will be removed and a new crown will be adjusted to properly fit your tooth and bite. If everything is okay, the crown will be cemented into place.

Caring for your dental crown

Majority of dental restorations don’t require more care than actual teeth. However, a crown does not protect the tooth from decay and gum disease. To ensure your tooth and crown stay healthy, you need to brush your teeth twice daily, floss regularly, and rinse with an antibacterial mouthwash at least once a day. You also have to schedule regular dental checkups and cleanings with your dentist to ensure that your tooth and crown are in good working order.

How much do dental crowns cost?

The cost of a dental crown placement varies per patient. No two procedures are exactly alike, but there are common factors that influence the cost of dental crown placement:

  • The material used for the crown
  • The location of the tooth being replaced
  • The amount of preparation needed to place the crown
