What are Dental Veneers?

Dental veneers are thin custom-made shells that are attached to the surface of the teeth to change its color, shape, or size. They are designed to look like natural teeth. Veneers are used to treat dental cosmetic concerns such as misalignment, discoloration, or gaps in teeth.

What to expect during your dental veneer procedure?

Your dentist prepares your tooth by removing a small amount of enamel to make room for your veneers. Then, he/she will take an impression of the tooth and send it to a dental lab. It may take several days for the dental lab to make your veneers. Your dentist may give you temporary veneers to wear in the meantime. At the next visit, your dentist will place the veneers on your teeth to make sure it they fit and make adjustments. Then, he/she will clean your teeth and bond the veneers to your teeth.

Caring for your dental veneers

You should take care of your veneers the exact way you would with your natural teeth. We recommend brushing at least twice a day and flossing once a day. You can get cavities under or around your veneers, so make sure  to maintain good oral hygiene. Veneers can chip or break under pressure. Avoid chewing on hard objects and biting your fingernails.

If you notice your veneers starting to fade in color, schedule an appointment with your dentist. He/she will polish the veneers to remove any stains. Do not use whitening strips or other whitening products because those won’t work on dental veneers.
