Dentures for patients in need of teeth replacement from dentist in Anaheim

What are dentures?

Dentures are a replacement for missing teeth and provide support for the cheeks and lips. These artificial teeth and gums are custom designed to fit your mouth and closely resemble your natural teeth. Custom dentures can help you regain your smile and ability to speak and chew your food. Dentures can either be full or partial which means they can either replace all teeth on the top or bottom gum line or just a few that are missing.

Types of Dentures

Dentures are made in a dental laboratory using impressions taken of your mouth. Your dentist will determine which of the following types of dentures suit you the best:

Conventional Denture
A conventional full denture is placed in your mouth after all of your teeth are removed and tissues (gums) have healed. As you wait for complete healing to take place, you will be without teeth for some time.

Immediate Denture
Your dentist prepares your immediate denture by taking measurements and making models of your jaw during a prior visit. After that, an immediate full denture is immediately inserted after the remaining teeth are extracted. The benefit of having an immediate denture is that you’ll never have to deal with having no teeth. However, they must be relined after several months because the bone supporting the teeth changes shape as it heals, causing the denture to become loose.

An overdenture fits over a small number of remaining natural teeth or dental implants. They provide improved function and retention compared to conventional dentures which become unstable over time.

Caring for your dentures

Just like your natural teeth, your dentures should be brushed and rinsed daily. Use a brush that is specifically designed to clean dentures so as not to damage them. Use a denture cleaner (hand soap or mild dish soap work well)  instead of regular toothpaste. The reason is toothpaste can be too abrasive.
