What are dental inlays and onlays?

Inlays and onlays are often used to cover the damaged surface of the tooth. These can be made of porcelain, gold, or composite resin. An inlay fits within the grooves that are within the cusps of your teeth. An onlay is larger and fits within the grooves but wraps up and over the cusps covering more of the tooth’s surface.

What to expect during your dental inlay/onlay procedure?

Two appointments are required to complete an inlay and onlay procedure. During the first visit, your dentist will remove the damaged or decayed area of the tooth. After that, an impression of the tooth is made by the dentist and sent to a dental lab. Your dentist will apply a temporary sealant on the tooth until the dental lab sends the inlay or onlay back to our office.

At the second appointment, the temporary sealant is removed. Your dentist will clean your tooth to prepare for the new inlay/onlay. He/she will also check to see if it fits correctly. If the fit does not interfere with your bite, your dentist will permanently attach the dental inlay or onlay to the tooth using a strong resin and polished to a smooth finish.

Caring for your inlay or onlay

Inlays and onlays are strong, long-lasting, and doesn’t require additional care than your natural teeth. With a combination of good oral hygiene and regular professional cleanings, your inlay or onlay can last for years to come.
